Replying may not even be needed. I know when I changed my number about a year ago someone texted me at my old number and they got a auto-response indicating the number was invalid. This may not happen with every provider though. Good way to see what numbers are active, if this is the case. I'm hoping maybe they stopped doing that now, or limit it to a very short time after a number is rendered useless.
