I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone. US mail only. IRS does not file lawsuits. Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter. But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters. 90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively. IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes. IRS has no powers of arrest. If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job. IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of money. IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone. IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case. No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments. Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement. All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals. All contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.
Recorded message saying the IRS was suing me, and that this was a "last attempt" notification from the "IRS-Internal Revenue Service" concerning an open case against me. The message instructed me to call them back immediately. According to other reports on this site about this number, the scam is pretty widespread.
Claiming that I owe back taxes and being sued.I have had issues with IRS before and knew that this is not how they work ,so I reported them to proper authority
7-2-15 I went home for lunch and there was message on my phone. It was terrible quality and all I got was filing a "lawsuit against me and to call this number. I know that the IRS does NOT notify people like this. but it's unnerving to get a call like this. I'm just glad to see I'm not the only one this happened to.
I too received a voice mail yesterday from 206-801-0789. Message (verbatim/word for word) was "Internal Revenue Services (plural with an "s"). The reason of this call is to inform you that IRS is filing lawsuit against you. To get more information about this case file, please call immediately on our department number 206-801-0789. I repeat 206-801-0789. Thank you". It was a prerecorded message which I would compare to a generic form letter. Grammar not correct. It was not a "live" person who had placed the call and identified themselves and was then leaving me a message. Woman's recorded voice. So, didn't identify themselves, didn't say for whom they were calling or who to ask for when calling back, no case number to refer to when calling them back. I called the number and it just rang 30+ times before I hung up. I believe the IRS would have an automated answering system. I was born but it wasn't yesterday. I will report to IRS and anyone else who wants this info.
