They have a very strong Indian Accent. this is a total scam, as the IRS will NEVER call you. They will only send correspondence through the mail. Do NOT give them ANY INFORMATION!!
I received an electronic or computer generated voice mail message from phone number 206-973-7492 on 2/27/17 threatening criminal prosecution for an unidentified debt via a pending warrant. I contacted my lawyer who advised me the following: He telephoned the number and a man with a thick accent answered identifying himself as "Agent Stone" with the IRS. When the lawyer requested "Agent Stone" to provide his contact information, "Agent Stone" hung up the phone. Most states have a fair debt collection act that lists what is, and is not, permissible to say and do in order to collect a debt. There is also a federal fair debt collection statute that most states use as their own model, and it also prohibits certain conduct to collect a debt including impersonating an IRS agent and threatening criminal prosecution. Please consider that most debt collectors are very wary of the laws that regulate their conduct and that provide statutory penalties if violated. And finally, most debt collection companies receive a percentage of what they collect, or pay a modest percentage to buy your debt in the hopes of collecting something. So there are opportunities to reduce your debt by simply negotiating the amount of debt and payment terms. A debt collectors worst nightmare is a bankruptcy filing which means costs for the creditor to pursue a debt in bankruptcy which is typically a small percentage recovery or zero recovery as the debt is likely an unsecured debt.
