There is a fairly common IRS or "tax scam" being practiced by scammers on both Canadian and USA residents.
USA tax payers should read this:

Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

This scam is also described as scam #11, here:

I received a message on my phone from an IRS officer John White with a hindu or pakistani accent stating "there is a federal investigation under this address, under this phone number." I called back, asked for a case number giving him no information on myself. I told him obviously he has caller ID so he can give me information referring to the case. He said he wants my husband to call him in the morning otherwise not to bother him. NOT TO BOTHER HIM?!?!?!? When I proceeded telling him
I am an IRS agent, he hung up.
Been getting hang up calls from 210-418-4563 all week. Today they finally left a message. He did not use my name - but said he was "Officer John White" from the "IRS Dept." & that my "address was under Federal Investigation" & there was a "warrant for (my) arrest". 1st off... I am THE biggest goodie-goodie on the planet - lol. Second, he had a super thick accent & I had to replay it 3 times to understand. It seems like a total scam. I did not call back, but I DID report it to tigta.gov & the FTC. Grrr!
I got a call from this number just now and like others wrote it was an officer John Wayne or sth and my address is under investigation, just like others but I've been getting calls like that from different numbers every week on this day. I am tired of it and I'm reporting it because its a harassment. It's a scam.
