Same message, different officer. Calling from IRS, I owe money to Federal govt, pay or the will issue a warrant for arrest. If I hang up, police is on the way. They had my phone and address.
I got a local California number 818-825-4690, saying that they are calling from Ventura county office and I have three federal charges and are issueing an arrest warrant in 30 mins. I was asked to call this number 210-424-2344 and speak to office Thomas O'Brien. He started harassing me saying I owe about $3000 in federal taxes and I need to pay it immediately. I was bit shaken by their threatening. My wife heard them and told that this is scam and we checked on google to find lot of folks have complained about them. They wanted the debit card info. I cut the call and informed police.
This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam a year ago:
I just received this call also. Called back got and answer the first time. Subsequent calls went to voicemail or says line is disconnected. Called and confirmed there are no outstanding warrants. I would like to know the reasoning behind this scam as they did not ask for money!!
