I tell him, "sir, your vompany has called before. I informed then ehen they called that I am signed up on the do not call registry. Please honor my request snd mark my phone number in your list as do not call.
He replied, "for our compsny not to call you then you have to pay us $500."
When I saw this number on Caller I.D. and saw it was a New York State phone number I answered, "Vancouver Police Department, Cyber Crimes Division. You are calling a Canadian number, I see you are calling from a New York State area code, I will transfer your call to the New York City Police." Before I could finish I heard a click as the guy hung up and I have not received any more calls from this number. I have received similar calls from other numbers and if I talk to them they always say the same thing: They give my last name followed by my first name initial, which is how it appears in the phone book (My brother worked in the security dept. for the local phone company and for security reasons he recommended that you never have your first name in the phone book, only your initial), so that is how they get your last name and phone number. If you want these calls to stop get a new, unlisted number.
Reporting these calls to the police would be a waste of time since the caller is technically not breaking any laws and could tell the police that they were simply offering you a service which you would be free to decline. To prove harassment you would need to document each and every call – where and when the call came from and who the caller was. You can bet its a different caller each time so that would prove to be a useless and time consuming effort on your part.
Here is some advice my brother gave me: If you do answer the call, in a short, terse manner simply say, "My computer is working fine, I do not need your services.... please do not call me again." and then hang up immediately so they cannot respond. If you answer like this, they may still call back but the calls will become fewer and fewer. If you have an answering machine, do not answer the call but let the machine answer it. Trust me, they will not talk to a machine and will give up calling you once they know they cannot talk to a person.
Me: Hello?
Him: Yes I'm calling from Microsoft Computer Services because we have received reports of a problem on your computer.
Him: May I speak with the primary computer user in your home?
Me: Speaking.
Him: .... Hello?
Me: Yes. Speaking.
Him: You see, WIndows computers periodically send out error reports to our servers and recently we have found that there have been some issues on your computer. We are calling in order to help sort out these issues.
Me: Oh! Well you called just in time, I was having some issues right now.
Him: Yes, sir, please describe your issue..
Me: I'm sitting in front of a black screen with some white letters on it. It says "bash" and then there's a dollar sign next to it.
Him: ...
Me: Hello?
Him: Yes sir, is this is a Microsoft computer?
Me: No, actually, it's a linux machine and I'm awfully curious as to how it would send status reports about my server to Microsoft.
I got this call as well - this is how I handled it :
Me : Hello
Caller : Yes, this is Microsoft Tech Support, and we have received an error report from your computer and would like to correct this problem.
Me : Huh, I didn't know a computer could do that (at this moment he probably thinks he found a sucker)
Caller : Yes sir it can. Can you go to this website, and click on download and install so we can fix any problems you may having? (I forgot the website, but I'm not that flipping stupid to do as he asks)
Me : Which version of Windows is the error from?
Caller : Our report shows that it's Windows 7 sir
Me : Wow!! That's kind of hard to believe that you knows all that. Does that report also say that I'm using a Chromebook and NOT Windows?

They manage to call about once a month - but I have too much fun with them by speaking in different languages - it's always fun to screw with their heads
Caller ID says New York. Indian sounding individual claiming to be from some Legal Department. Couldn't understand much of what he was saying, so just hung up on him mid-spiel.
