I received a call from 213-289-9000 today (21Dec11) identified as from Los Angeles, which was a survey with political questions and I was to use a touch tone response, as follows: press 1 through 5 to respond to question (with 1 meaning strongly disagree and 5 strongly agree). The first three questions asked if I agreed with the Democratic House and Senate members votes on recent legislation. My responses were 1, 1, and 1. Somehow, after I punched 1 several times on the 3rd question, I was disconnected. I called the number above and received a female's voice (with British accent) asking for my "group number" to be punched in and I was unable to get past this initial screening statement.
My concern is that the ostensible questions regarding the survey were fake and that it is possible that my responses with pressing "1" after those questions really represented my authorizing some sort of charges that I would later receive on one of my billing statements in the future. For example, a charge on my telephone bill, bank account, etc. Although I did not give any info except to punch "1" three different times after their questions, I wonder if I could be authorizing a fraudulently induced charge.
I rechecked my caller ID and confirmed that the phone number I referenced previously was 213-289-9000 was actually 213-289-9000. After reading all of the personal reports, I can say that I was indeed called by ESG Research Group about an ostensible survey on Democrats voting on debt crisis legislation. I suppose I got disconnected from the robo survey when I pressed "1" three times in a row because I never got as far as the point where a cruise or a request for cc info was made. Again, my concern was whether or not my punching in "1" was really an authorization for charges on my billing statements such as my phone bill. From what I have read, everyone alludes to ESG attempting to get credit card number as their sole ploy.
