I just got a call from the same number. I didn't pick so they left a message. When I listened to the message it was a recorded message saying "this is to inform you that you have certified mail that was returned undeliverable. Press 1 to speak to representative." Then it hung up. When I called back some lady answered and asked for my phone #. I asked who/what Company this was. She would never say until I gave her my #. Said she had to look up who called. I asked again who/what company this was. She finally said US Mediators. I hung up. I figured this was a SCAM !
I just got a call from the same number. when I answered it was a recorded message saying "this is to inform you that you have certified mail that was returned undeliverable. I missed a call from the Same number telling me I missed some type of certified letter. I called back and got transferred me to Caroline Stratton, claiming to be an attorney for US mediation. (Doesn't exist). She had me going to whole time claiming I would be jailed with 5,000 bond if not paid by 4 pm today. I was literally at the money gram stand and the lady refused the transaction claim it was a scam (1325 bucs). They wanted me to send money to an Amanda Lopez in Jacksonville florida. She told me to go to local police station where we verified it was all a scam. That you Jillian at money gram.
Being in ordinary civil debt is not a crime and you cannot be arrested or jailed for it. We do not have debtors prisons in the US. You can check this out by yourself by simply going down to your local police station and telling the person at the public counter about this call.
In any event moneygrams are essentially untraceable and are a favorite among scammers. Do not pay any attention to someone who cold calls you and tells you you are going to be arrested or hit with a cvil suit unless you immediately pay them money.
Just because a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt does not mean you owe it
If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:
1. Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2. Demand a debt validation letter by US mail. E-mail no good.
3. Do not pay the collection agent or anyone else a DIME until the debt is validated.
Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply block their calls and ignore them.
If they are bothering you,
Report them:
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening criminal prosecution to collect a civil debt is a clear violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Act)
Also contact your local attorney general
If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion. You might have to yell at the scammer and talk over him or her. Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved. Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.
I received the same message. If there was something sent to me certified, the post office would have left a notice. That never happened. It is just a ploy to get you to call them back.
