Called 5/11/15 5:41 PM PDT. Caller ID showed "Theater Direct" and this number. My phone answered by Sentry robo caller blocker. No message left. Note: We were at a musical show Saturday night which included a silent auction and had bid on several items which required posting of your phone number! Good way for scammers to get leads.

The reason for the phone numbers is because some people will leave the silent auction before the end and thus have no idea they had won. The numbers are to contact them in this situation.
You are ranting that those phone numbers went to scammers. Most of the time the theater does not want their customer list going out. However, all it takes is one idiot that just has to share the list with everyone, or make an easy buck on the side ...
Finally, that theater probably gives those telephone numbers to a telemarketing group they contract with for selling season tickets, etc.
I got involved with stage theater in 1988, and found that telemarketing was the only way the theaters could sell substantial numbers of season passes. Mailing out subscriptions to previous season ticket holders just did not result in a lot of sales. People have to be reminded they want those season tickets; they get assigned seats if they do buy season passes.
Then, a day before their scheduled play date for their ticket, they have to be called to remind them they want to see that play. The fun part was asking them if they would like to schedule their tickets for another day so the theater could sell the seat to a walk-up who wanted to see the play. It raised more money and also prevented a lot of empty seats in the early part of the show's schedule. "Sold out" for the theaters meant "all seats occupied" - needed for word-of-mouth advertising.
