(This is SO, SO long - Sorry in advance) *Info below is the basis for my suspicion & Red Flag, and may be helpful.
Got a text on my phone from 214-365-3044, addressed to my spouse, not me. Claimed to be DirectTV retailer that recently set up our service: "Last chance" for tablets compatible with AT&T provider, asked "When can I call you to explain a little more?" Red flag! Search revealed 214-365-3044 is neither AT&T nor DirectTV number. Results show it belongs to a person, and 2 sources named the same person. Seems that personal info AT&T gave to DirectTV was supplied to 3rd parties. I didn't respond, and blocked the number.
* We did recently switch from Uverse to DirectTV, both with AT&T.
AT&T techs & customer service made the changes, not DirectTV.
Our phone provider is AT&T which has both my and my husband's cell phone numbers, and always addresses texts or emails with the correct names.
AT&T always sends sales info via emails with links to their website for more info.
The only texts we receive from AT&T are alerts about data or minutes usage, include links to account info, and are one-way communications (the only response possible is "STOP").
We've never received texts, emails, or calls from 3rd party entities claiming to be doing so on behalf of AT&T.
