mystery solved. i called the university of pennsylvania and it turns out that the calls are legitimate and they do have students calling alumni. they won't start leaving messages until june, and the number is not something that you can dial into. the three numbers that came from them are:

I'm a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania calling to update alumni records." He had my former last name - what it was when I went to Penn. I didn't give him any info, just said I had recently updated my records online and then he hung up...
