Here is one of those companies that sells YOUR cell and home phone number to the slimeballs and scumbags that attempt to scam you:

1.) when you press the number to be taken off the list, you are verifying your number.  Your number is then sold as a legitimate number.  I get calls from someone with Google all the time. I just tell them that they cannot guarantee my website will go to the top of the list. I'll string them along and waste their time. The I'll simply tell them that I don't have a web site.

2.) The car warranty is a scam also. They even send me letters via snail mail and use the dealers letterhead to make me think it's legit. I took it to the dealership and told him that I did not appreciate them selling my name to a scammer.  The dealership alleges that they don't sell the names, but there's no way a scammer can get my PO Box number, i' not public on the web. BBB warns about these as well.

3.) The DNC list is a joke. The state hasn't got the staff and funding to go after these guys and the Fed's are useless as well.

For months I have been getting calls from "cloaked numbers."  They have my area code, and they use my exchange 840 and many, many other last four digit numbers.  The recording claims to be Marriott Hotels offering me a free stay at one of its hotels.  I do business with Marriott, so I know this is untrue.  I have contacted Marriott about it, too, and they confirmed it is not they who are making these calls.  These telemarketers/scammers are lower than pond scum.
