That's because they're not real. Glad to meet someone who tries to at least do research. If you search deep enough you can find newspaper articles about this scam group.
Claimed to be a breast cancer organization, soliciting. I knew it was a scam call, and deliberately answered because I saw the Caller ID said "breast cancer," and this particular cause is near and dear to me because all the women in my family died of breast cancer, and to run a scam where so many people are in an emotionally vulnerable state, infuriates me. So I was prepared when I picked up the phone.
I told her that I was well informed about the cancer charity issue, knew she was part of a scam, that they've already been in trouble with the law, that they steal money from charities that actually do some good and that she preys on naive people. They're fakes. I'd read newspaper articles and also seen TV journalism reports about them, and knew about her group's tactics. I jumped down her throat and tore her a new one before she could make her pitch. It is reprehensible to take advantage for something like cancer. She didn't expect to be dealing with an informed consumer. A real charity would have refuted my accusations and offered documentation.
As a suggestion, if you want to donate to the breast cancer cause, consider Susan G. Komen. The American Cancer Society uses somewhere between a third and close to half of every dollar you donate for "administrative purposes" (shiny trifolds, expensive TV ads with paid celebrities,
massive mail solicitations, magazine ads, fat cat doctors wearing silk suits, paying for websites, expensive fundraisers, tshirts), Most of it doesn't go to survivors of cancer or their families. All hot air and not enough substance. The ACS won't help people to get cancer tests or any other kind of prevention, they often won't even help with aftercare or something as simple as transportation or a hospital bed at home. They only help, and only sometimes, after you are already diagnosed. In other words, they prefer to lock the barn door after the horse is already stolen, when it's too late and there is more suffering. Cancer is a lucrative business.
Komen's group applies more money to survivors and their families. Just sayin'. I hope they didn't fool any of you!
