Left voicemail to call back 240-509-1284 number. When I called, it took a while to ring. I thought it was my phone so I hung up and used a different number to call back. When someone finally answered, a man with a strong Indian accent answered and first had to ask what number I was calling and my name. Then he proceeded to say that I was about to have a warrant issued, and all my assets, property, and drivers license would be taken away if I did not pay the IRS back $7602 dollars that I was owed to the government from the years 2012-2016. He said that I had 2 options. To file a lawsuit against the US government and try my hand at court in Washington with a risk that if I lose I would owe $20,000-25,000 more for trying to fraud the government, or I could agree to pay the full amount and make payment installations with the minimal payment to be $500.00 to show "good faith."
When I tried to question the authenticity by asking if I could research and/or call back as I wanted to be sure that this was not a scam, he became irritated and said that I was "questioning his authority." When I asked his address, he told me the address but could not tell me the zip code. I asked if I could call back and he said as soon as he hangs up the call unless he receives a definite answer that I would agree to pay the full amount and to make an immediate payment of $500 he would be forced to report me to authorities. I asked to place the call on hold then while I call the IRS to verify his call, and he sounded hesitate like he didn't know how to answer. I took that opportunity to put him on hold and as soon as I did he hung up.
Then I called the IRS to verify that my account was okay and they said it clearly sounded like a scam and there was no way that I would've received my tax refund this year if I had owed the government money to the IRS. They said that it would take at least 4 months for the government to take action if money was due therefore the tax refund I just received would not have been issued.
Do not give money, do not give information, do not agree to anything.
