People here are saying that this phone number belongs to Portfolio Recovery, but I don't think it is. I think it is someone masquerading as Portfolio Recovery. A huge lawsuit was just recently settled against them for robo-dialing. There is no way they are going to do this again. I mean, they are traded on the NASDAQ! They would lose all their investors if PRA kept doing things that make them lose lawsuits! There is something fishy about this recent spurt of hang-up calls from "Portfolio Recovery". The complaints about these phone calls begin only three weeks ago, exactly on May 1. Portfolio Recovery has been around for decades! That these phone calls are coming from Portfolio Recovery does not add up.
Some people have returned the call and said they answered "Portfolio Recovery". What doesn't add up is that you are here defending them, even though you are aware of a recent lawsuit against them. That raises the question towards why you are shilling for them? Are you a client, employee or just want to say hello and its ok to answer?
The fact that they have paid out millions in fines to the government and people who have sued them for breaking the law means nothing to them. It is simply pocket change that is written off as a business expense or paid for by their insurance company. They are doing this, and they continue to do it simply because that is their business model. They also have well over 500 known numbers that they call from and have purchased a whole block of numbers from some defunct telco company. So there is nothing odd about a new number popping up with Portfolio's name attached to it. You obviously got a call from this number, but I fail to see why you wouldn't believe that a criminal enterprise like Portfolio would not be the ones calling you. After all, they just want to get paid, they don't care who pays them or even if the right person pays them. They buy lists of people who allegedly owe money, sometimes from 10 or more years ago and then use that information to harass people. They don't bother to check so many times that information is no longer valid. Or they simply look up everyone with the same last name in that town and call all those people hoping to find a victim they can steal from.
