They called this morning, but I was too far from phone to catch it in time; left no message.
I'm especially "on high alert" since a creep who called from India (or so he claimed) scammed me into believing he worked for Microsoft and that they were calling registered users to offer them a special removal service for harmful data -- and the SOB nearly got me. I literally gave this con man my debit card info, which he kept insisting was wrong. I was almost screaming at him at that point:
"THE INFO IS CORRECT! BUT YOU REFUSE TO LISTEN TO ME! I AM D-I-S-A-B-L-E-D! MY MONEY DOES NOT HIT MY ACCOUNT UNTIL THE FIRST OF THE MONTH, AND YOU KEEP TRYING TO TAKE IT OUT IMMEDIATELY WHEN IT ISN'T THERE!"
Well, thank goodness he was so greedy, because that's what tipped me off to his fronting a scam. I called my bank and canceled my debit card immediately, placing an order for a new one.
Still, his call haunts me. How did he get my name and phone number? Our phone isn't listed in my name, nor remotely close.
Needless to say, when the first of the month arrived, Mr. Con Man mysteriously did not call back after he was blocked from my account now. Since he never asked for my back account & routing #'s, seems like he was only interested in the fast-debit payoff. But I'm still creeped out at how close he got, and it was a pain in the keister to set up a new card, as I have no car to go to bank to sign the new paperwork, but it worked out.
And yes, I'm mad at me for falling for a scam. In 14 years of online life, I never have before, and am usually sooo cautious. But as embarassing as the whole thing was, I hope by sharing it, perhaps it can help a honest computer user avoid this scam.
