**I was selling an item on Craigslist. Was Stupid enough to fall for it....NOT stupid enough to cash the check!! I was told they were sending a check and the shipping charges would be included...the item was $25 and another $50 was offered for me to take the ad down right away and for my trouble...just got a check for $620.45!!!! The local police advised if I had cashed the check I would either be going to jail or be on the hook to repay the charges.

Oh BTW...the check was counterfeit...forgot to note that key piece of information! I really hope this person/people get caught and soon.

And the real danger is the counterfeit check is so good that your bank WILL accept it for deposit but YOU will be held accountable for depositing a bad check when it comes up bad. You can also be prosecuted for money laundering.

When I went to deposit the check, the bank called for verification which was immediately reported as an invalid cashier checks. Banks will not just hand you the funds. They verify it first.
