This number called my home, but I did not answer the call. The caller ID showed up as unknown. I do not answer calls from numbers I don't know. I have blocked this number. Almost every call that comes into my home anymore if from someone trying to scam me. The list of blocked numbers is growing longer every day.
Called my personal cell phone. Had a very strong middle-east accent that was hard to understand. Claimed to be from Microsoft Support and that he had been getting lots of error messages from my computer. The calling number that showed up was a Houston number, but he claimed to be in New York. I had some time, so I decided to take up as much of his as I could. I played dumb and we "struggled" laboriously through his instructions as he pointed out some totally irrelevant (but "technical" sounding) things that appeared on my screen. His ultimate goal was for me to give him access to my computer. After a considerable length of time I had a meeting to attend, so I finally leveled with him: I work for the Fraud Division of Microsoft. He sort of giggled (or choked) and hung up. I didn't have a chance to tell him:
1) Microsoft can NOT read errors (or anything else) on your computer unless you give them special, specific, and deliberate one-time permission to do so (and it is expensive if you are not under warranty).
2) Microsoft Support will NEVER call you out of the blue regarding anything on your computer.
3) Microsoft has no way of making an association between your phone number and any computer you use.
4) By following his instructions you would log onto a website that would allow him to take complete control of your computer, and then extort money from you to return control back to you....after he has hacked as much personal information as he can from your files.
This number phoned me twice within three minutes did not leave a message. When I called the number back got a recorded message from my carrier stating it was either disconnected or no longer in service.
