I saw this as an interesting puzzle so I did a full investigation to determine the root cause. Here's my analysis: Got a phone call from 281-491-6990, a Sugar Land, TX phone number. I did not answer and no voicemail was left but I called back minutes later to get a "number no longer in service" recording. I tracked down the number and found that it's supposedly registered to Alamo Title Co, using the name Linda Dunn, with Windstream Communications as the carrier. I went to the Alamo Title Co. website at http://www.alamotitle.com/ and found the Sugar Land branch location and called the phone number listed there. The lady who answered sounded more confused than I was. She has no knowledge of the 281-491-6990 phone number nor the name Linda Dunn. There was a Linda who works in their marketing group, but she has a different last name. This was the first time she's heard of strange phone calls coming from that number. I asked if she'd like me to send more information on what I researched for reference in case anyone else calls up asking questions, but she declined. I tracked down the associated address to the number and followed up with the leasing manager for the location. Apparently the suite has been vacant for over a year. I found that Alamo Title Company did in fact occupy that space, but that was several years ago. The most recent tenant of that space was a tech company. Using google street view I found the name and contact information for the company. I made contact with them and found that phone calls originating from their new location will still *show* as being from the old 281-491-6990 number, even though it's been disconnected. Apparently there have been issues with their system where phone calls where erroneously being made automatically, most likely by a malicious outside entity. It happened back in July 2014 and apparently again now. They were unaware of the overall scope and impact, so I informed them of the situation and hopefully they'll be able to permanently resolve the issue. - caller: Unknown - Hang up
