They're scammers - NEVER pay anything unless they send you via MAIL a debt validation letter proving that you owe the debt to them. They have also violated the FDCPA by threatening jail. Report them to the FTC, the FBI and your state's Attorney General.
If you receive any other calls from them - or other scammers - demand a debt validation letter giving original creditor, date of debt, amount owed, and if they are legally entitled to collect said debt in your state. If you had written bad checks, you would have received a letter from your financial institution stating this, and giving you a chance to make good on them. Also tell them you're recording all calls from them to give to the FBI and your Attorney General's office. They tend to back off some if they think you're recording them.
Again, NEVER pay money unless you are sure the debt is yours, you receive the mandated debt validation letter and the company calling is legally licensed to collect debt in your state. Make a note of all calls and try to get company names and addresses so you can report them.
Guy left me a message addressing my mother saying she'd missed the 10 day notice and had 2 pending counts of felony fraud. I'm guessing it's a collection agency using a scare tactic.
My mother got the same message about me going to get 2 felonies of fraud for writing checks and not paying them; of course, my mother became upset, because he said, I was going to jail and my kids would not have their dad around. The man stated, they would come to the house or the job and pick me up and take me to jail. My mother immediately called me and wanted to know had I ever used this check cashing service in the past, and I told her, I did not have that kind of money, so my mom, borrowed the money because they had scared her; that I would go to jail. Well, long story short, we sent money western union and set up a payment date, but we asked for confirmation of payment and balance letter; the man, Kevin Smith, if that is his name, said, he would send a email, if not, a letter, however, we have not talked with Kevin since, we asked for confirmation. We now, know we have been scammed, and we don't know what to do about it. This week, John Anderson, calls and says, the same story, and told us that he was the representative of the same company. HELP, how many companies and scam artists are making a living on poor people who are trying to do the right thing, What shall we do, can we proscute/charge THEM WITH FRAUD?

Same thing happened to me some guy named Christopher Bisly who was very rude said I owed 2208 to a loan company which I never borrowed or approved that amount and if I didn't pay I would go to jail he said for me to call him back or else and I was freaking out due to the fact it was fraud due to bad check and I never had a checking account plus the loan company said I borrowed that amount back in 2008 and when I called my bank to verify if I was deposited that amount they informed me there was no such deposit in that amount am gonna report him if he calls and harasses me and my mom again.........
Got the same type of phone call today, only this time, I missed the call, so Kevin Smith called a friend of mine. When she asked how he got the number he laughed and said he has his ways, and that he is allowed to research the number. I don't know how he got her number as I have never used it as a reference for anything, but these types of calls are getting old real fast. My co-worker received the same call from Kevin Smith last week, to our WORK number. How he got that is the same mystery as how he got my friends number. I wonder how we can get these to stop.
