Its trans world international a collection company calling from a local number to get you to answer. Once you answer and say hello a few times someone will ask for whomever they are looking for. I got a new cell # and they were looking for whomever had it before me. I asked be removed and they haven't called again.
Debt collection agency. Really lousy telephone skills, but not entirely a scam (as far as I can tell.)
When I first spoke with them, they insisted on only speaking with the president of our corporation (as listed in public records). As a duly authorized representative of our company, I insisted they speak to me or our attorney. At that point the phone went silent, so I hung up.
Acting on the belief that most scammers won't have a legitimate caller ID, I called them back. Got a busy signal and a circuits busy message a couple of times, but got through on the third call.
I convinced the person on the other line that if they had any business with this number, they would have to talk to me. Based on my caller ID, she was able to pull up details regarding an old merchant processing account we had. She claimed that the account had been closed, and that this was a final billing which had been turned over to collections. The time frame and amount seemed to match up with the facts regarding when we closed out this account with that particular vendor.
Why the vendor never mailed us an invoice for that final payment is beyond me, but so far the details regarding the vendor name and when we closed out the account are accurate. I do not see how a scammer would have ready access to that info, and based on prior dealings with collections agencies this does seem legit. Now I need to dig up old records on an account we closed almost three years ago to yell at a vendor who seems to be too lazy to mail an invoice.
