Generally these scams are a money laundering type.
The scammer will get you to send him money, the most common way is by sending you a check for an amount over what you are selling your item for.
Here is how the "Check over the amount" scam works:
Says they will buy your item, sight unseen.
Says they will pay over the amount you want to cover shipping, or will claim someone other than <their name> will send you a check.
Says to take the extra money from the check and wire-transfer or pre-paid card to the shipping agent they provide or back to them.
You receive a cashiers check, bank daft check, or certified check for a large amount over your items cost.
You cash/deposit the check and then wire-transfer or pre-paid card per instructions.
After about 2~3 weeks, the check is returned, bounced, due to it being counterfeit or stolen.
The money you sent, went to the scammer.
As you wire-transferred or pre-paid card your own money, it is unrecoverable.
You are now out the money you sent, plus return check fees, plus risk arrest for passing a fake or stolen check.

Another common method is running the same type of "over the amount" scam via an online money transfer service, like PayPal.
Here is how the PayPal Scam, or any other online money service, works:
They say they will buy your item, unseen.
They say they will pay you extra money to cover the shipping charges through their shipping company or agent.
They request your email address linked to your PayPal account.
They instruct you to wire the extra funds they send you to their shipping company or agent.
You receive a invoice from PayPal to your email, stating the funds have been deposited to your PayPal account.
So, you use your money to wire the funds to the shipper.
You then find out the PayPal email was fake, it was sent by the scammer, there were no funds deposited into your PayPal account.
The money you wired, was really picked up by the scammer, it is unrecoverable.
You are out the money you wired.
