Keep getting calls from this number. Says they are out of Kensington, MD. The number on the caller id is this one. It just robo calls, literally every 20-30 minutes with an automated message that says my name with a case number that has been filed against me. And when they get to the "please call us back at" line, all it says is HI. I tried to call back from the caller id and was on hold forever only to get someone who asks me for the last 4 digits of my SSN to confirm it's me and give me the information. However, when they answer the phone, they do not say their company name nor have I ever gotten a letter in the mail. It says they are a "arbitrator".  I looked on case search for Maryland and there is not one thing in my name for a law suit.

Now, I have had these bogus calls before and know that I can't be arrested for an outstanding loan, but my question is, in order to find out if they are legitimate, I have to give them the last 4 digits of my SSN in order for them to give me the information. They didn't ask for the whole SSN, just the last 4 digits. What should I do? They have my home #, work #, and cell #. If I get a live person, and give them the last 4 digits of my SSN, will that in turn mean they will have confirmation of my whole SSN?

I ignored one once, only to find out later they were indeed a collection company - but that's because they sent a letter at the same time as calling me for a an old credit card I owed on - and knew it to be true. They never asked me for personal information and they certainly didn't say there was a case against me and that this is my "official notification".

I haven't been put into collections for anything. So now what???? Should I give them the last 4 of my SSN to determine the truthfulness?

Call themselves "Global Services" supposedly located in Chicago.  Total debt scamming operation.   Do not give them any information.

Do NOT call them back.  The term "arbitrator" is just scammer double-talk for debt collector.   (As is "mediator". )

As I say, they are debt scammers attempting to get information and most likely attempting extortion against you.

Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.

If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:

1.    Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2.     Demand a debt validation letter by US mail.  E-mail no good.
3.    Do not pay  the collection agent or anyone else a  dime until the debt is validated

Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.

If they are bothering you, report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening civil proceedings with no intent to follow through, or threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a  violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.)  The same goes for endless telephone harassment

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you,  and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.

You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them.  Tell 'em  no scammy debt collector is going to push you around.

I have reason to believe they may be an off-shore scamming out fit located in the Caribbean.

Thank you - but to clarify -------

Does a true, legitimate collection company call you, ask for your last four digits of your SSN to verify your identity? Or will you get a letter in the mail first, then a call from them, so then I would already know what it's about?

Or should I not worry about it because there is nothing outstanding on any of my 3 credit reports? Thanks.
