I have now received to phone calls from 305-224-1007 today stating I was facing criminal charges from CRA and I told them that this was a scam. I did call back and told them I was reporting them to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Agency (free information on CRA Website). Hope they get the msg that we are not stupid!
Have received 3 phone messages in past week about tax deficiencies and tax fraud. Very hard to understand one message, but the word "arrested" was clear, as was the phone number. My record with the CRA is clean, so this is a scam.
First call from this number had part of the message cut off so it sounded urgent to call them back to enquire about tax fraud. The second call was more threatening in that "We have filed a criminal case against you for tax fraud and embezzlement - call this number immediately" I live in Canada never paid any US taxes and don't have any US assets.
They don't use any name - the babysitter could have answered the phone and been told "We have filed a criminal case against you" What's the scam? Do they get a portion of the long distance charge?
It's a complete scam. They scare people into thinking they might be fined, arrested and jailed for failing to pay taxes or making an error, etc. It's all a lie. They then instruct their victims to pay immediately to avoid prosecution. Sometimes they get credit cards but usually they tell the victim to get a prepaid card and send it to a PO box. The cards are collected and run through some money laundering accounts before being sent off to India, Pakistan, Russia, or wherever. There was a "big bust" recently in the US of the persons who collect the cards. Here's the story:
Received a call from this number stating "We have filed a criminal case against you for tax fraud". Same as the other calls above. Just ignore them. Hopefully by publicizing these numbers, people will become aware that these calls are almost always a scam.
