I received a call from Vitelity LLC, they told me I had won $279,000 from Publisher's Clearing House and that we should be receiving a package today (Tuesday 4/4/11) We knew from the first that it was a scam for several reasons, one being that Publisher's Clearing House does not call if you are a winner especially from winnings of a previous contest that we 'had not claimed.' Today instead of receiving a package, we received a telephone call.
The caller ID gave the number of the caller as 214-377-5991 BUT the man that was calling (a different person from the first caller last week) said he was Roland Suliveras, Director of the Miami International Airport, U.S. Customs Border Protection and gave me his personal number for my husband to call him back which was 305-647-2182. By the way, there really is a Mr. Suliveras and he really is with the USCBP in Miami. This person calling was not Mr. Suliveras but was an imposter.
I did ask him at first if he could be reached at a Miami area code, WHY was his call coming from a 214 area code which in fact is a Texas area code. He said the caller ID gave us the wrong number. Wrong.
Anyway, all of this is a elaborate scam and these people are pulling out all the stops trying to fool people. During this conversation the man said he had our package that they had to open because it came from Costa Rica and in the package was a certified check for $279,000, a form for us to fill out for our income taxes due on the money, etc etc and asked if we were in deed expecting this package. Going along with it, we told him yes we were expecting it. Then he asked if we had contacted Publisher's Clearing House and my husband told him yes we had and we knew it was a scam. We were going to play it on out to get all the information we could but he was tired of fooling with them. So all we have are the names (ficticious) and the telephone numbers they gave us to return calls.
I did call the real Miami Internation Airport, US Customs Border Protection and talked to a person there and they said they were already investigating this scam but was not making any headway. I gave them all the telephone numbers the Scam Artists gave me. So hopefully, that will lead them to these people.
I can't stress enough for everyone to be prepared, forearmed and forewarned on these type scams. Anytime someone calls you saying you've won something, get all the information you can and check it out for yourself, before you give any personal information.
