Just received a call from someone with middle Eastern accent claiming to be from Microsoft license department . They said they were shutting my computer down because of hackers sending out messages wanting money and claiming to be me . I'm a truckdriver and was in N . Carolina at the time . My home computer is in Alabama . This person told me I would be held liable and criminal charges would be brought against me if I did not allow them to shutdown my computer . I told this person , I don't know who you are or much less if your from Microsoft and hung up my cell phone . If you agree to them shutting your computer down supposedly they charge you to turn it back on . they wanted to know when I'd be back home and for me to call 312-265-3261 . LOL !!!
This person, John Smith with an asian accent, called to say he was with Microsoft Computer Liscense Department. Gave me the first 8 didgets of my licnese and said that hackers were using my email to procure money. Wanted to talk me through taking off the IP addresses.
I said that I wanted to verify the call and he said to call (312) 265-3261 to verify. I called Microsoft in Chicago (312) 920-5600 and was told to contact the Liscense Department by email as Microsoft is not known to call and inform individuals of hackers using the individual's email.
Just got the same call as Ms Holloway, but my Asian accented scammer was named James Kirk. I wonder if his middle initial is T. I spoke with tech support at my website hosting company who confirmed that Microsoft would never do this.
caller said he was with Microsoft Computer Liscense Department. He didn't want to sell me anything, he just needed access to my computer to fix the problem.
