Any caller who refuses to mail you proof of debt and that you owe the debt to them, plus refuses to identify themselves, is owed nothing, per the FDCPA.
BTW, if you're concerned that a "legal matter" has been filed with your county, just call up your local county court and ask - they'll tell you if you're named and on the schedule. And if you really were named in a lawsuit, you'd have received something in the mail or had papers delivered by a court process server.
Called at 8:00am on 10/28/13. The man on the phone said he worked for AVS. He said its a company that tracks people down for attorneys. I then told a legal matter was filed with the county and that I needed to verify my address. When I asked him what attorney he was working for he wouldn't tell me. When I asked for a mailing address he couldn't give that either.
