I live in California, got a call from this number. They left a voicemail saying that they will be serving me "legal documents" about a lawsuit. That they are coming to my home or place of work within 24 hours. The voicemail did not contain my name or any details. It is a scam.

Other than that, there is no "James Kane Associates" - except for weight loss doctors and surgeons - in Chicago, IL. Looks like a spoofed number. If you had a court case against you, you would receive a court summons via process server or even certified or registered mail - your EX-SIL wouldn't receive a vague, threatening phone call. Conclusion: scam attempt, with scammers calling third parties in an attempt to embarrass you into paying for a bogus debt, debt that has already been paid, or even debt that is owed - but not to the caller.
This number called and said they were a courier would be at our home in two days and to have pic id and social to receive this document. Called them and got a voicemail. Is this a scam?
