They keep calling me from different numbers and sending threatening letters. I talked to a lawyer in Houston and he claims this will continue until you settle or go to court, which is not legally right since they file everything out of Washington D.C. I do not live there. Mark Lutz has called from 3 different numbers, they are real and I believe they set me up for copyright infringment and are trying to turn it on me and ruin me. They are extoriton schemers and want $3400 to settle for something I am 1000% innocent of.
If you keep an eye on the various websites profiling the court cases involving these jerks, you'll see that the courts are painting the scam artists into a corner and, eventually, they'll have no chance whatsoever in a court of law itself. The only way they'll be motivated to keep doing this is if people give in to their empty demands so, no matter what, don't talk to them and DEFINITELY don't settle!
My Father received a three-page letter from Prenda Law, located in Illinois, saying Dad had violated some kind of copyright law online. The letter said they would settle out of court for $4,000.00 -- other wise they would take Dad to court and he would have to pay $100,000.00. Since Dad's antiquated computer doesn't go online and he hadn't used his computer for five or six years, Mom also contacted a judge, her friend who attends one of her classes. The judge told Mom that these people don't have a leg to stand on, because they do not have authority to practice in our state. He advised her to send a copy of the letter to the Justice Department, which she did.
Dad was in his mid-80's and was a WW2 Veteran, who'd been a prisoner of war in Nazi Germany. He hasn't been well for years, has not been online for years and was in the hospital when this letter came. Dad died shortly afterward. Representatives of Prenda Law are now calling and leaving threatening messages on my Mother's phone--things like, "we've been nice up to now. Since you haven't responded we will be taking you to court, etc."
Just before these calls began coming in, Mom, who is working on other legal matters, attained legal representation through Legal Shield. Hopefully once our lawyers contact these bullying scammers from Illinois, they'll stop harassing our poor mother.
We have had the same thing happen to us. My Father received a three-page letter from Prenda Law, located in Illinois, saying Dad had violated some kind of copyright law online. The letter said they would settle out of court for $4,000.00 -- other wise they would take Dad to court. Mom talked to a judge friend of hers who advised her that these people don't have a leg to stand on, because they do not have authority to practice in our state. He advised her to send a copy of the letter to the Justice Department, which she did. Dad died last year--now Mom is receiving the same kind of threatening phone calls that you are receiving.
I thought it might be a comfort to know what the judge said.
By the way, the letter is dated two days before Dad died. What a thing for my Mother to have to worry about when this extortion letter came through. I hope the courts put a stop to this right away--I've also read that Prenda Law has sued dead people, old people, people who don't have computers or the internet. Prenda Law is a "copyright troll".
In my note above, I was incorrect when I wrote the obnoxious, brutal, extortion letter from Prenda Law came before Dad died. The letter was DATED two days before he died and Mom received the letter the week AFTER he was gone. What an awful thing for her to have to face, as she was facing all the things which must be done after a person dies.
