Thank you for writing this and all the advice. I did speak with them and told them I didn't know the man they were looking for, that I didn't even know anyone with a similar name. I asked to be removed from their list and she said "no problem, I'll remove you". They now call me between 2 to 4 times a day.
I would fight this if I could, but I've been in and out of the hospitals with MS and other things and just don't have the time or the energy. I don't have any friends and only a few family members who are also ill so they can't help me either. Their calls go straight to voicemail, so I don't even know when they call unless I check my incoming/outgoing list. If I get better I'll look more into this.
They are a collection agency call Diversified Consultants. They call from similar phone numbers about once a day. I'm not the person they are trying to collect the debt from, but they think I know who the guy is even tho I don't know anyone with his name. I believe this is connected to the previous owner of my phone number.

You need to send them a certified, return receipt cease and desist calling or "not me" letter (think of it as the best $6.47 you ever invested). You also need to report them to the proper agencies to which I have provided links to. Then you need to go out and get a consumer lawyer to sue them on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket) and let them pay you for the harassment. If everyone did these three things, these crooks would be bankrupt and we would all be the richer for it. Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

There is no real fighting involved. First you send that certified "not me" letter. The complaints can be done online in a few minutes. If you need a lawyer, you can probably get one to come to the hospital if necessary. They do all the work all you need to to is sit back and try to be well. The hardest part will be at the end when you have to actually take that nice fat check to the bank and deposit it.
