What I am about to say applies to any unsolicited loan offers received by text message, email, or telephone, and postal mail solicitations not originating from a well known commercial lending institution.
This number, (323) 236-3497, was used in a Text message loan scam.
As always, DO NOT reply to such messages, even to say "STOP". Replying to them can have various bad consequences, from validating the number for them, to generating charges on your cell phone bill (and I'm not talking about the cost of sending a text).
Check your cell phone bill regularly for subscription services you did not authorize.
If you do not use any subscription services, contact your cell phone provider and block all such services from your account. Periodically call your cell phone provider to make sure the block is still in place. I find that such settings tend to mysteriously "disappear" from your account over time.
If you attempt to get a loan from someone spamming you, here is how you will be victimized:
(1) You will never receive any money from them.
[You might get a bogus check which will make your life really miserable should you deposit it. Think the check is good? Get your bank's fraud department to help you decide. (If it is good, let me know, and I'll treat you to pizza and beer. In other words, it will eventually bounce like a Superball™)]
(2) They may ask you to pay some sort of advance fee. The may call it a loan origination fee, pre-paid interest, credit check fee, what ever they dream up that day. I call it the money they plan to steal from you in the beginning. (But wait, there's more!)
(3) They will gather all of your personal information as part of the "loan application".
(4) Months later they will use that information to victimize you again. While identity theft is a possibility, people who try to get these "loans" don't usually have very good credit, so the more likely scam is phony debt collection. They will call you and attempt to extort money from you for a loan which never existed. Since they have all of your personal information, it makes these scam calls very scary. DO NOT PAY THEM, IT WILL NOT MAKE THEM LEAVE YOU ALONE.
These people (and I use the term people loosely) are gangsters. Many of them are located overseas. If you have fallen for one of these scams, make a police report. Tell us about it here. And contact the credit bureaus to freeze your credit. Be sure to keep a copy of the police report as long as you live, as you may need it years down the road.
