I received a text saying, "This is Microsoft. There has been unauthorized activity on your account.please reply with your verification code." I also received a text from Microsoft Outlook with a verification code to reset my password. I did NOT supply the code to the 323-328-1883 because I'm not an idiot.
Called my cell phone.
Woman's voice, asked for me by name.
I always counter with "Who's calling?"
Gave a plausible-sounding name and launched into a prepared speech about collecting for breast cancer research.
I interrupted and asked her name again.
She launched into the speech again.
I asked if she's a 'bot.
She insisted she's a live person but I'm not convinced.
Damn! These chatbots are getting more sophisticated all the time.
Lots of research being done to improve them, but for what use?
Seems the scammers are getting first pick of them.....
Am I the only one who sees something wrong with this picture?
I did a little more digging - this probably is a scam. The real Breast Cancer Research people say:
"Charity scams also rely on telemarketing firms, with very little, if any, of the donations going to charity. This was the case for scammers like the Cancer Fund of America and Breast Cancer Society, which eventually prompted a federal investigation for fraud. Remember, too, that charity scammers can use caller ID spoofing to make you think they’re calling from a real nonprofit."
