An in-person meeting will always begin by the IRS agent presenting an official government ID that you are allowed to inspect. Any contact, via either mail or phone, will always begin by addressing you by your full name and will include a case number. Anything without these is a scam. If you think you have been contacted by a real IRS agent, still don't trust them until you've verified everything by calling the IRS general contact line at 1-800-829-1040.
