When I answered the call, it was a pre-recorded message saying that legal action has been taken against me and I should call back. Already knowing this is most likely a scam, I called back. The first time, someone answered and hung up before saying anything. I called back again and got an Indian guy telling me that he is from the US Treasury, read off (presumably) a fake badge ID number, and told me that an arrest warrant has been issued against my name for TAX EVASION! He claimed in 2012, my taxes weren't filed correctly, and I owe $3125. Now my taxes, are pretty cut and dry, I don't itemize or anything like that. So I know this is false. I told him that this is not possible, and he said that if I didn't pay the money right then and there, the arrest warrant will be executed after ending the call. I took my chances and hung up. Still not in jail, so this obviously is a scam.
Our house got a call from this same number. It was frightening to hear this automated call. I had no idea who the caller was, it just hung up. He said someone in the house hold had committed a federal crime and we had to appear in court before a judge. Thanks for your posting, now I know it's really a scam.
