My 78 yr old mother answered a phone call in Spanish during a crowded family reunion on 1/20/2013. My mother was tricked into believing it was a nephew. He claimed he was going to visit us in LA from Tijuana, Mexico, the next day and asked what the nearest airport to us was. Unwittingly we provided him with my cell phone number so I could meet him at the arrival terminal. He promised to call again the next day on 1/21/2013 once he was at the departure airport to provide the airline information. He did so and I took the call in the morning. I became alert when he began to explain he ran into a small problem, that he had stuffed $10,000 into his check-in baggage and customs agents at the departure airport had detained him and needed a verification from me that he wasn't involved in any illegal activity. At that point I had my mother talk to him in order to distract him and I could investigate the origin of the phone number on the caller ID and contacted the real relative he was claiming to be. Once I confronted the caller that I knew he wasn't who he said to be, he threatened to send someone to my home to assault me. I reported the call to my local police dept but no actual crime took place.
