I just received a call from Teckfreaks which I feel was a scam. English was defintely not the callers first language. He wanted me to go to my computer and enter certain information, ect and I refused and hung up. He called back and said we had been disconnected and I told him I had hung up. He provided me with a phone # 888-756-1516, but I have not called it. I'm sure this is a scam as he was not able to answer all my questions.
WARNING: I just got a scam call from 347-348-0788 informing me my computer was infected with malicious code, and that if I went in front my computer he could show me what he was talking about (presumably through some sort of remote access). I asked him to provide my IP address to prove it was coming fro my computer, and he said he didn't have that information. Just a reminder to be alert for people trying to take advantage of you!
This is definitely a scam. When I asked what the name of the virus was he started telling me that here are lots that could be on my PC. Then I let him know I'd been in IT a long time and knew about viruses and he hung up.
Yes this is definitely a bogus and fraud. They keep on calling me for 3 times with restricted number somehow i was escaped as i was driving then they call me using this 347-348-0788 number and started giving me all sort of information that your computer is affected with virus and we get your information from international routing system and blah blah blah....
First thing come to my mind is who you are? - They were unable to answer that question
Second thing why the hack they want to help me, even if there are virus on my PC?
Third and very important, How can i trust you with information you are calling me?
They even don't know my name, i believe they are blindly trying random numbers to catch some computer novice and make them fool by scaring with virus and all sorts of story they have.
Although this number is showing of NYC i can make out from voice that they are using digital phone and calling outside usa, probably india (from way they are talking)
I too was called upon from the same caller about 7 times (so far). What's really strange is that I HAVE been having problems with my computer; so I started to believe that this has some validity to it. However, I kept telling the guy that I am not near my PC, so we cannot do what he wants me to do at my PC. Most of the time, he calls, says his name is Allen, but calls from 000-000-0000. Only once did he call with this number I am posting about. He has given me a number to call him back, but I haven't bothered to try it. It's funny that he cannot even correctly pronounce the work "viruses" because he says "wiwusses" and I just laugh and tell him there are no wiwusses on my PC. I told him to call me back today in four hours. I am just gonna go along with his call and tell him I am doing what he wants me to do. I'll try to be sure to come back and post more info about this after that.
The caller instructed me to select run, and type "prefetch" - I this populated a list of .pf files. Many of the names of these files were associated with valid programs for my PC. I told him they didn't look malicious, and I wasn't suspicious of them. He told me to try to open one of them by double clicking on them. I did, but Windows didn't know what program to use to open them. He used THAT as a reason that they were malicious. I told him that those files aren't probably meant to be opened that that anyway; they are like little reference files that those programs use. He said, "Okay, fine, maam," and he hung up on me. They probably wanted me to buy something that could sweep those out of my PC or something.
