I got a call this am, a rapid fire speaker with a strong Indian accent, who said his name was "Paul Phoenix" and that he was from the Yellow Pages on line and that this call was to cancel my on line business ad listing. I recently stopped my YP ad from AT&T after many years, and thought maybe this was some subsidary. I couldn't understand half of what "Paul" said, but apparently I needed a "cancellation number" or they would send the bill for $599 for the past year to me. They then verified my business address, to verify info. Turns out they had a 4 year old address. Then, they switched me to an American voiced male, who said he was going to record this transaction, and that if I just answered "yes" to everything it would only take 60 seconds. However, it became clear this was in order to get my fax number to fax me the above mentioned bill. I realized something was very off by now, but have had similar calls from Indian accented people calling to "verify" my business listing online somewhere many times over the years, so I was slow to put this together. I told them I wasn't going to pay them a dime, and that I had never authorized any advertisement to begin with, and furthermore, if they were going to charge me for an ad that was running out of date information on my location, then they have hurt my business, not helped. The American said he was going to transfer me to his supervisor, and he hung up. The Indian guy called back again, and I yelled at him that he better be taping this call, because I was not paying any bill of any kind. He said "if you work with me, I can get you out of this with that cancellation number." I told him, if there was anything to cancel, he better do it, as if I hear form him again, I'll take him to court. I hung up. He called back a minute later, leaving no message, and then again in 20 minutes, leaving no message. I should have caught on much sooner. Glad there are sites like this one.
