I got several calls today and an email. My identity was stolen and I have been dealing with this kind of crap for a few years now. Every day I get emails or text messages saying that the loan I applied for is ready. I never applied for any loan!!! They need to stop because this is crazy and I don't have time for this.
Just recieved the same e-mail at work. What a bunch of idiots- I like where they say our ssn will be put on hold uh? what does that even mean may be they do that in their country but not in the US. I usually respond and tell them to "f off" but i just deleted it this time. I know its a scam because i have never taken any payday loans out.
This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
Got the same email about 5 minutes ago. Who are these people and how did they get my email address.
I dont even know what a pay day loan is or how it works.
I almost got taken, because I have a federal school loan of about that amount over 60 days past due with ACS education. I only skimmed the email at first. So I emailed back and forth with them and noticed some things not making sense, ending with them demanding I make my settlement payment with a Green Dot card. I asked why they couldn't charge the bank account on file and they said for security they can't keep bank acct #s (aka-they make you buy a card with cash that can't be tracked). So I contacted the REAL ACS through my borrower login to check it out and obviously then looked here. After I spent a long email telling these people how much I was struggling to pay my debts, thinking this was my school loan holder, they had no remorse to keep trying to milk me for $350. I'm glad the warning bells went off, because this had exactly enough bits of truth that I'd have been totally taken. I am trying to get ACS to send a mass email to loan holders warning of this scam, because I'm sure we're the target.
It happens that I actually went to women's college with the daughters of several Indian and Nepali officials and reporters. I just sent them a lovely reply that they may not need to fear the US gov't but that they tried to scam someone who can have an investigation opened in their country. I dropped a few names to prove my point. We'll see if that gets any kind of response. I am actually going to reach out to my contacts there. Who knows; maybe we can ACTUALLY get these guys.
