A tax client just called me all in a panic said IRS called her and was going to take legal action if she didn't pay TODAY.
I told her it had to be a scam
Got a call just a few minutes ago regarding "legal action" and "second avoidance of notice by U.S. Treasury" and similar things.
Called back with a different phone, and it was a "Robert Schmidt" coming from the "U.S. Treasury." When I started asking him about who he had an arrest warrant out on, he said something to the effect of "Matthew (unintelligible last name)"; when I questioned him further, he disconnected. When I tried calling back, it turns out that he blocked my number.
I received two messages on my answering machine from a Dennis Gray with the United States Treasury Dept. regarding a so-called "Federal Criminal Offense" and the need to appear before a grand jury! I was suspicious right away because he said "We are trying to contact you regarding..." But did not say a name. He left a regular phone number and not an 800 number. I would think if it were a matter this serious, they would have sent a subpoena long before calling!
