This was a rare time I actually answered the call, though the CID screamed "fake" or "spam" &/or spoofed. Yes indeed. From "New York" (where I am, and happened to be by the phone waiting on a call), on a whim I answered to try to I.D. the spammer. "Hi, this is customer service..." said a cheerful, male, human-like voice. "Service from what?" I asked. "Great, I'm pleased to tell you, you have been selected for a free trip"...
And I hung up and selected them back - to report to NYS AG, CFPB and Do-Not-Call, not that anything will be done until/unless the phone companies do the right thing and deploy robo-caller/spam/spoof filters that they already have and which they have approval (and wide support) to use. There's nothing else that can be done at present, as this is (1) spoofed (2) probably not coming from within the U.S., or if so, by criminals who clearly do not care about such things as the law, or "Do Not Call". Called an unlisted number to boot, and do-not-call registered (US & NY).
Our ONLY respite from constant robo-calling, spamming criminals is for the phone companies to protect THEIR consumers! But they won't. There is a growing number of signatories to a Consumers Union petition to force the phone companies to do the right thing and give customers existing tools to stop this stuff. Please sign!
