I have been getting these calls from a "Mike Smith" repeatedly in the last few days. Well I work with my local police department almost everyday since I work for the City and reported this to my Chief of Police. He has done some investigating and contacted the FBI, there are 2 type of scams going on: One is where middle eastern sounding people call leaving messages threatening that if you or your attorney do not call them you will be arrested....this is to scare people into calling them back and they charge YOU or YOUR ATTORNEY $50.00 a minute you are on the line with them. The 2nd is to say you owe a past debt and try to get you to give them your bank account information to pay off that debt or they say they will arrest you. PEOPLE DO NOT CALL THESE SCUMBAGS BACK AND WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION, THEY CANNOT ARREST YOU FOR OWING A DEBT..THAT IS A CIVIL MATTER NOT A CRIMINAL ONE. I keep getting calls, 4 and 5 a day from this number. The guy "Thomas" speaks with a heavy accent and threatens me with going to jail and that I should get an attorney and have my attorney call him or I will "suffer the consequences". He never says who he is with, what company he is representing or anything... The number does not come up listed as a business or any kind.
i have been getting the same call as sherry. It is from a 347 area code from a guy with a heavy accent that sounds like he would be from India or something, and he threatens that I have my attorny call him, that I will get in trouble, go to court, spend 6 months in prison, and wish me the best of luck. anybody else get calls like this? and then when you ask them what is this call about, they don't even tell you what they want, they just get very angry with you. has anybody found out what this is all about?
Laura - this is a huge scam. These middle eastern crackpots have stolen peoples information and are set up in call centers spoofing numbers (thats why they are often busy or cannot be completed as dialed when you try to call back) trying to extort money. Read the post by "lamet" under the number 646-918-8890 on this site - it has alot of good information. prepare yourself - once the calls starts they keep coming - form all different numbers - but al have the same M.O. - middle eastern (usually men - but sometimes women) call and threaten you with all kinds of crazy stuff - which could not be done even if the debt was valid! They either refer to themselve as officer or lawyers - one actually said he was Prince William form the United Nations Legal Department, another said the United Federal Investigation Office. They are thieves - who will call your employer or family and friends if the information they stole lists those numbers. Most victims are people who either inquiered about or have had payday loans - but not all. Good luck - I have been dealing with these calls since February - I hope they are caught soon and kicked off the planet! To anyone who gets these calls - do not fall for therir threats - do not give them any information or confirm the information they have. Report all calls to your state attorney general (several state attoeny generals have already issued warnings) and to www.ic3.gov. Sometimes they put fake posts up to make themselve look legitimate to people who google them and enbd up here - but these are easy to spot because they do not write english any better than they speak it.
I just recieved a voice mail from the same guy. He threatened my husband with getting arrested and that he or my husbands attorny needs to call as soon as possible. This has been going on since May and nothing has come from it. We have reported them to the sherifs offics in nH but there is nothing they can do since the number cannot be traced. We were told to find an attorny that would be willing to try and call them and threaten to take legal action if they continued to call. The calls did stop for a few weeks and just started up agian.
