My neighbor fell for it. I found out about a month later when she was telling me how great her computer was running. I told her it was a scam and she immediately went in and turned off here computer. She and her husband spent the next couple of days getting new bank account numbers.
She took the computer to a local computer repair place. The only problem they found was that the scammer ahd turned-off her anti-malware program. So the scammer could have been watching her on-line banking, spamming from her computer, or running DDoS attacks.
Got a call from woman with Indian accent (background sounded like boiler room).
I had just synced my phone with icloud and my Windows computer earlier in the day. I was getting a message box when I used my e-mail that asked me to enter my user name and password. So, when she said she had been sending that message I did not hang up.
The woman on the phone said my computer had been downloading illegal files from the internet for the past 45 days and her company had been trying to reach me. She said she was a "Windows Technical Advisor". She would help me. I needed to follow her instructions exactly: "Hold down the Windows key on your keyboard with the letter "r" at the same time". I didn't do it. I asked her how do I know this is not a scam. She offered to have me talk to her supervisor. Instead I told her I had to call her back later. She said to be sure to call her back at 347-761-3354 and ask for her , "Carol Montero". Her accent was so thick I couldn't understand the first name until she spelled it. Later, she called my home phone and asked was I trying to return the call yet. I hung up. I am not sure what she was trying to do, but it wasn't good.
This scammer is trying to gain access to your computer to possibly steal your identity. Do NOT talk to them or give them access to your computer!
Windows employees never call people. This is 100% a scam! Good for you for not falling for it!
