Man called, Steve Martin by name, and said that he was an officer of the U.S. Treasury and that I need to return his call to avoid prosecution by a magistrate for some tax beef. He had thick East Indian accent and was insisting that he knew who I am and that I was in danger of federal prosecution. When called him agent, he was taken back. When demanded his I.D. number he hung up. This is what my husband and I were told to do by the real IRS.
The IRS still uses ink and paper if they have a problem with tax delinquency. Their agents do not ambush and terrify citizens like cheap hoodlums by phone or email.
