Received a call from 360-369-6016 it was an automated message that said the IRS is planning to sue me and I had to call back that number. Called back twice and it was busy. I went on the IRS website and found an article warning taxpayers to guard themselves against scam artists. Here is the link to the article:
Same thing happened to me. I did call the number back and a man with a heavy accent said he was IRS and correctly identified my address, proceeded to threaten me with a lawsuit re my taxes, claimed to have sent 2 certified letter to my address. As I questioned his legit. He threatened to send the "sheriff" (they have seen too many westerns!). I asked him where he was located and at that point he used abusive language. I hung up. Most worrisome is that they have your address! Why does not the IRS track their phone numbers? This is where the NSA information comes in handy!
As an FYI, when I checked my caller ID last night, the number the call originated from was actually 360-556-2212 and the location listed was Vancouver, WA (Washington). The number they wanted me to call was 360-369-6016 (which I called a couple of times but was always busy). In any event, from everything I have read on the IRS websites, they never call you direct, never ask for a credit card, never send you emails and never threaten you especially over the phone. They will always mail you although some scammers have tried this with fairly authentic looking letterhead stationery but you can log into the IRS web site or call them for further info. Another option for us is to call the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration - Office of Investigations (Toll Free 1-800-366-4484). Here is the link:
