Joel was always well liked by everyone. You make one enemy who is clinically disposed, that is, carries insurmountable baggage, and this mushrooms into a handful of losers who have failed and continue to fail in life and need to take it out on this one man. And then there's the anonymity of the Internet. Safe for all who fear to show their faces. The popularity of Joel among his students will make him a most missed person in academia and his legacy as a leader and professor will live on forever. I was permitted to sit in on his clinical classes that I had taken earlier from another professor. No comparison. This man knew psychology, psychoanalysis, and clinical diagnosis and could relate to current modern thought in theory, therapy, and practice. And then there was that great big, long, Buick Electra. You could see the man arriving in style. All of us who knew Joel mourn his loss. There will never be another.
