I just received a call from "Rhode Island Directory" as it stated and the number was 401-555-777. They had Indian accents and were claiming that I had some Windows 32 issue....I KNOW my computer is FINE, and when I said that I was on the National DO NOT Call list which prohibited them from making marketing or solicitous calls to my home, he tried to tell me that he was calling because of my computer (???)....In the background as I argued to take me OFF OF THEIR CALLING LIST IMMEDIATELY, another voice came on and said, "hurry up and just hang up" also with a thick accent. I put the number in Bing and it came up that this ABSOLUTELY is a telephone scamming ring from India that tries to claim they are with Microsoft, and try to CONVINCE YOU to allow access remotely to your computer to assess the problem. ONCE YOU DO, they install a virus that sits in the back and steals your information. OH, and then they CHARGE you for the service call........HANG UP everyone. It has made the rounds in the UK and Australia and apparently it is now operating here........JUST A HUGE HEADS UP FOR YOU ALL!
My brother in law in Oregon got this call, became suspicious and called me the 'family geek' looked up that number, and found this post. I told him to unplug his cable modem, that ended their RDP connection quite abruptly. I then told him if they called back, to say he was 'on to them' and hang up.
Same thing here, near Portland. I let her go on for a while to see how much money she was trying to get out of people - she/they are looking for $135 dollars and remote access to your computer... uhm NO. Too bad there are unsuspecting people that will really find her helpful instead of sneaky...
I received a call for a guy with an (Indian or Pakistani) accent who wanted me to open my computer, go to computer management consul, event viewer, Windows log etc. I had him go on for a while. During the call he gave the phone to another guy with the same accent who tried to continue the (so called Windows Tech dept.) tech service. I hung up a couple of times, they called back. I held them as long as I could, and try to string them on, without my computer on. I was just disturbed a bit because I was having a good nap. The Caller ID said Dir ASST.....RI* but the caller said he was calling from Salt Lake City Utah.
I just hung up with this call, like cla7913 I was having a great nap. ugh! Same thing, very strong accent with lots of attitude. I too let them go for a while. Asked numerous times what company they were with and I got "we are very concerned you just downloaded a very malicious virus and need to help you." (In my sleep I did this?) back with this strong sense of urgency "I need you to go to your computer and right click on my computer, have you done that." They finally hung up on me when I said I'd check my own computer but I'd be happy to write down what he was saying.
Yes - Scammers from overseas, India/Pakistan/OneofManyStan?
Very obstreperous.
Somehow they had my nickname.
Aggravating. They don't give up.
I have hi-pitched tone device I play when they call now.....still they hang on.
