someone claiming to be an investigator for fraud [checks] keeps calling me trying to get me to pay via my debit card, for a check that my ex used to get a pay day loan at one of those pay day loan places in dc that have now been shut down. the check had both our names on it and it bounced when because it was an old check on an checking account that had been closed. This was over six years ago and like I said befor the co. was closed by the dc gov. This guy said he was gonna get a warrent issued to arrest us if I don't pay up now. Is he legit? Or is this one of those scavenger type scemes where con artist try to collect [for themselves] on peoples old debts? how can I tell and what should I do? Can anyone please advise? thanks, netty
These clowns are impersonating law enforcement officers and trying to trick people into paying old checks that half the time weren't even owed, and are past the statute of limitations in most states. They claim to be the company of Channing and Associates but they aren't licensed to collect in my state. Complaint to your attorney general and make a police report, then if you can find them, get a lawyer and sue them for about five different violations of fair debt collection law.
