Received a scam text message: "Congratulations! you have received a discount of $100 dollars on your next month bill please visit http:blahblah vz50offer" --- sounds fishy enough.

received the exact same text. this is bull. now spam messages via text?! this has to stop.

I got the same text. I found this page from AT&T about how they investigate unwanted texts. I suggest checking it out or googling "unwanted texts AT&T".

I forwarded the text and AT&T's system responded immediately and asked for the phone number.
