Have received emails at first from a "James Ford". It is suppose to be for a job. This gentleman is suppose to be sending me a check today that I am suppose to deposit in my bank today when it comes. I am to use this money to help him with his job as a personal assistant. He texted me today like he said he was asking if I had checked with the USPS And tracked when the package is to arrive. He hasn't asked me for anything but my name address and cell number. He did ask me which bank I banked with but hasn't asked me any personal information pertaining to account number or social number.
Same thing for me, he said he will meet with me Monday but this all seems off. I am not for sure what to do!? If this is a scam or some sort of strange person is going to show up at my door. I mean they put these ads on craigslist and they all ended up being this job and I do not like Being lied too I should of never filled out the other email.
This is a standard scam. You are what is commonly called a "mule". The cheque will be a fake (counterfeit or stolen). You will be told to deposit it into your account, then keep a certain percentage for yourself and send the rest via Western Union or some other money transfer service. After a few days, weeks, or months, the bank will discover the fraud and take the original amount of money out of your account (probably sending you into overdraft). Then you will receive a visit from the police because of "your" criminal activity. If you receive a cheque, destroy it immediately and cease all contact with the scammer.
