Received a call offering to lower the interest rate of my credit card. I pressed '9' to speak with the agent. When the agent answered, I asked if they can send the offer via mail. She said no and before I could ask another question I was disconnected.
Got a call from credit card services. Instructions were press 9; Steve asked for my name; I informed Steve that I was on the 'do not call' list, and he rudely hung up.
Received call from a company offering to reduce my MasterCard and Visa interest rates. I do not have a MasterCard. Someone asked for my name; I gave a fake one. Then he asked for the first four digits of my credit card to 'confirm' my information in hid 'database.' I gave him the four numbers associated with a GM MasterCard. He typed int he four numbers and said, "Thank you Bill, we have confirmed with GM MasterCard that you are eligible for a 4.8% interest rates, I just need some more information from you to process the request..."
Based on the conversation, this appears to be a telephone phising SCAM. The first four numbers of any credit or debit card are unique to each bank. The operator typed in the four digits I gave him into a publicly available database to get the bank name. He then told me the bank name to try to convince me that he is affiliated with the bank. After that, he hoped I would have enough confidence in him to give him my remaining personal information.
